With the release of his ‘7’ EP, 20 year old American rapper, singer, and songwriter, Montero Lamar Hill better known as Lil Nas X has landed a steady album debut on the billboard 200. The Georgia Native who first stole the show with the viral rise of his first single “Old Town Road” after being released as part of a challenge on the ‘TikTok’ app released the much awaited EP on the 21st of June.
The EP which rides solely on the success of ‘Old Town Road’ comfortably earned a total of 77,000 equivalent album units. Most would call this disappointing based on the dust raised by its preceding single, still the ‘7’ EP is unarguably the most streamed album of the week, boasting a total 90.4 million on-audio streams.
Of the total 77,000 equivalent album units earned by Lil Nas X’s 7 EP, 4,000 of those were from digital album sales, 8,000 from track equivalent album units, and 66,000 from streaming equivalent album units.
The debut EP was edged off the top stop by The Raconteurs’ “Help Us Stranger” album which earned a total 88,000 equivalent album units mostly due to it being supported by a concert ticket sale.
The ‘7’ EP has received mixed reviews from music critics, earning as low as a 4.3/10 on Pitchfork and a C+ on ‘Consequence of Sound’ who called it “Lightweight and best consumed in selective increments, but also strangely addictive”.
