Donald Glover praises Halle Bailey, says “You earned it“. Since news broke that Halle Bailey had been cast as the lead character, Ariel in Disney’s Live Action film ‘ The Little Mermaid‘, it has received a lot of backlash. Most of the backlash as been aimed at the singer and ‘Grownish‘ star mostly because of the colour of her skin.
A lot of people have criticized the idea of having a black girl play Ariel while some (mostly blacks) have celebrated the announcement. Some have argued the fact that Ariel‘s appearance would change the live-action remake of the movie. They have also criticized Disney for it’s decision to change the original portrayal of the movie’s lead character.
According to them, Ariel is pale-skinned and blue-eyed, with iconic red hair and it shouldn’t be altered or it would change the concept of the film. Social media users reacting to the news wrote;
” A black Ariel….nice bit of positive discrimination…. Let’s also make Ursula thin and the Prince gay to tick some more boxes….world has gone bat s***…she’s an iconic character… White with red hair!”
” hmm. Could this be classified as blackwashing? Halle is an amazing actress, but the whole Ariel mythology (book, movies, lore) is European based. This looks more like tokenism to me.”
Actor and rapper, Donald Glover has also shown support for Halle concerning her casting. While at the premiere of ‘The Lion King‘, the star while being interviewed by E! News correspondent, Zuri Hall said;
” we were just watching that film and I’m like…that’s such a great story but I’m just like, I dunno (makes a long face). I just hope that’s she’s like, having fun. And don’t let anybody make you feel the opposite of how you want to feel. It’s a very special role and you earned it, so I hope you’re listening. ”
