Africa’s leading record producer and DJ, Black Coffee has opened up about working with global superstar, Rihanna, as well as a missed opportunity with Hip Hop mogul, Jay-Z.
This revelation is coming months after the superstar DJ also announced that he is working with other international stars such as Diddy and Usher.
Black Coffee had an interview with Metro FM on Friday and the “Your Eyes“ hitmaker explained that he was approached by members of Rihanna‘s team while he was working with American singer, Cassie. They asked if they could use one of his songs for the “Umbrella” crooner’s album.
Once Black Coffee sent over some of the songs in his stash, they asked further information about a particular one he had recorded for Cassie because Rihanna was actually interested in that one.
Unfortunately, Black Coffee refused that offer and assured them of a new song which he is still working on. “It freaks me out. They are still waiting,” he said.
However, one of the biggest opportunities for the global master of the decks and turntables came earlier this year when his close friend, US producer, Swizz Beatz, told him that he wanted Black Coffee to record a song for Jay-Z‘s album “4:44.”
“Swizz reached out and said Jay is looking for one song before he concludes his album. It freaked me out. I am in Milan, I couldn’t sleep. He literally called me: ‘I spoke to Jay. Jay wants a song.’ I couldn’t sleep. Then I didn’t work. I couldn’t. How do you produce a song for Jay -Z? He kept saying: Ýo, man. I’m waiting’. I think I failed him but subconsciously I think I wanted to. I wasn’t ready.” the celebrated disc jockey said.
Black Coffee further explained that his major concern was the fact that the US rap legend had used so many producers before who had a list of beats Jay-Z could pick from. He said Jay could just work into the studio, sample about 20 beats and then choose one. However, the South African DJ doesn’t work like that.
“I don’t work like that. I am like let’s do a song. What tempo? I’m not one of those producer who goes to studio everyday and have a list of songs to play people,” he said.
However, South African fans can still expect Black Coffee to make them proud as he is working with Diddy and Usher currently. Perhaps, something big is just about to be commissioned just as he worked on Drake‘s global hit song, “Get It Together.”
