Griselda‘s Westside Gunn blazes like a Shaldag in his album titled “Flygod Is an Awesome God,” a follow-up to his “Supreme Blientele ” of 2018. The album comes right behind the release of label mate Benny the Butcher‘s wave-making EP “The Fangs I Met.“
For an album of 12 tracks, it is not surprising Westside Gunn should co-opt several guests. There’s nothing novel about him dropping his alongside a long list of backup rappers, though. Who would begrudge Westside Gunn his choices here?
- Jul 27th
- Sensational Sherri
- Ferragamo Funeral
- Thousand Shot Mac
- Pete Sake
- Amherst Station
- Dance Floor Love
- Lakers vs Rockets
Westside Gunn‘s co-opting several artistes in no way deserves the big stick. The Buffalo, New York, rapper, who nurses a deep attachment to his roots, did remarkably well alongside his choice of features.
The feature list has the likes of Conway, Madlib, Alchemist, Sauce Walka, Benny The Butcher and Raekwon.
Since he burst into the music scene in the States, Westside Gunn, whose birth name is Alvin Lamar Worthy, has charmed America with many numbers, including “Mr T” and “Brossface Brippler.” Today he is justly famous as one of the prolific on America’s rap scene.
“Flygod Is an Awesome God” is a great listen as much for its aesthetics as for its didactic tropes. The album merits a place on a playlist. You may count yours in.
