Classically-trained pianist, Alicia Keys unveiled an emotive cover of Billie Eilish’s 2016 breakout hit “Ocean Eyes” on Instagram.
In the clip, the musician, singer, and songwriter took a stripped-down approach on the brooding track. She gave the original’s light percussion and synth melodies a piano-buoyed take, while equally moody and yearning.
Sitting at and playing the upright piano, Keys launches into the song, transforming the synth-heavy track into a gut-wrenching piano ballad. She delivered the aching lyrics with her eyes closed while she nods her head along, with cascading piano flourishes added to the melody. The bare-bones rework is straightforward and simple, though the singer’s vocals are anything but low-key as she flaunted her powerhouse pipes.
In the Instagram post, keys wrote;
“Billie Eilish giving me all the feels. Keep shining mama, writing that truth.”
Apart from Keys covering Eilish song, other musicians including Blossoms, Sigrid, Bring Me the Horizon, and Machine Gun Kelly, have also shared their own covers of the pop starlet’s hit songs.
Meanwhile, in a recent Rolling Stone interview, Eilish spoke about self-harming and her struggle with depression. She said;
“It sent me down a hole. I went through a whole self-harming phase — we don’t have to go into it. But the gist of it was, I felt like I deserved to be in pain.”
The 17-year-old pop star collaborated with Justin Bieber last month for a remix of ‘bad guy’, a single from her debut album, ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’
